President Moon Jae-in has taken a test ride on South Korea’s new low carbon bullet train his first Korean New Deal itinerary of 2021.
The EMU-260 or Electric Multiple Unit which has a maximum speed of 260 kilometers an hour will run between Wonju in Gangwon-do Province and Jecheon in Chungcheongbuk-do Province starting Tuesday.
An EMU consists of self-propelled carriages using electricity as the motive power.
It’s South Korea’s first such train made using domestic technology.
Named KTX E-um it only emits some 80 percent of the CO2 pumped out by a regular KTX train.
South Korea plans to change all trains to EMU by 2029 to cut emissions to 165-thousand tons from 235-thousand tons in 2019.
