The highly contagious Delta variant appears to be as transmissible as chickenpox and can cause more severe illness than MERS.
According to an internal document from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, people who have received both vaccine doses might still spread the Delta variant at the same rate as those who are unvaccinated.
The CDC has published this data to advise fully vaccinated Americans to wear masks indoors.
On average, a person infected by the Delta variant will infect eight or nine others, while the original coronavirus infects around two other people.
