One in five people over the age of 65 live alone in South Korea.
According to the 2020 Population and Housing Census provided by Statistics Korea,.. more than 1.6 million elderly people live without a spouse or children.
This is up by nearly 36-percent compared to data compiled in 2015.
The number of people in single-person households over the age of 80 has also jumped 50-percent in the same time period.
Most elderly single-person households are located in regions outside the greater Seoul area, with the highest proportion in Jeollanam-do Province, at almost 14-percent.
