The total number of refugee applications received by South Korea has exceeded 70-thousand.
According to the Justice Ministry on Monday, the number of applicants from 1994 to August this year amounted to 70,two-hundred-54.
The number from this January to August fell almost 37 percent from the same period last year due to the pandemic.
Over that period, around 40 were recognized as refugees and some 120 received humanitarian status.
To discourage bogus applications, South Korea has a notoriously tough screening process.
As a result, only around four percent of applicants have been allowed to stay in South Korea since 1994.
