The trial of Samsung’s de facto leader, Lee Jae-yong on charges of violating capital market laws will begin in the coming hours.
However, Lee himself does not need to be present as the Seoul Central District Court is calling both parties, the prosecutors and defendants, for a prep session, to plan out the trial in an efficient manner.
The case will review several charges of illegal activities that led to the merger of two Samsung Group affiliates, Samsung C&T and Cheil Industries, along with other incidents prosecutors find suspicious.
Prosecutors say the moves were made to ensure Lee inherited control of the group from his hospitalized father.
Samsung argues it was a legal, business decision.
