Appellate court to rule in Samsung heir Lee Jae-yong’s bribery case

A local appeals court is set to deliver the final verdict for Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman, Lee Jae-yong, in the retrial of a bribery case involving former President Park Geun-hye.
Charged with giving over 27 million U.S. dollars in bribes and promising more, prosecutors are seeking a nine-year prison term for Lee.
However, Lee’s lawyers claim he was a victim of Park’s abuse of presidential power and did not receive any special favors in return.
Lee’s initial sentence in 2017 was overturned by the Supreme Court in 2019.
The court will also take into consideration Samsung’s compliance with laws and ethics as monitored by an independent compliance committee over the past year, as well as Samsung’s significance to the South Korean economy.
