Prosecutors called for an 18-month prison term for the defamation charge brought against former President Chun Doo-hwan.
In his 2017 memoir, Chun called a now deceased Catholic priest a “shameless liar” and “Satan under a mask”for testifying that troops in helicopters fired machine guns at civilians during the Gwangju Democratization Movement in May 18th, 1980.
The ex-president did not attend the hearing at Gwangju District Court and rejected several court summons since being indicted in mid-2018citing health reasons, claiming he has dementia.
A ruling is expected to be delivered late this year.
