Human rights watchdog recommends foreign ministry to improve ‘shortcomings

South Korea’s human rights watchdog has recommended that the foreign ministry improve certain “shortcomings” revealed in its handling of the diplomat sexual abuse case.
The National Human Rights Commission gave a nonbinding recommendation on Wednesdayfor the ministry to create a concrete investigation procedure manual for sexual harassment cases.
It also calls for the diplomat to pay the victim a certain amount in compensation.
A former local employee at the South Korean Embassy in Wellington accused a Korean diplomat of groping him on three occasions in 2017. The case then resurfaced after New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern raised the issue with President Moon Jae-in earlier this year.
