President Moon Jae-in has honored a late labor activist with a national medal, the highest of its kind, to commemorate his efforts to raise awareness about the terrible labor conditions of workers making clothes.
Chun Tae-il was a worker at a clothing manufacturer who self-immolated himself to death on this day in 1970, demanding the Labor Standard Act be observed.
The president also expressed gratitude to his mother for her sacrifice in continuing her son’s will for the past 50 years.
The event was prepared to express the government’s desire to realize a society that respects fair labor.
