With the sudden spike in cases, South Korea is running out of hospital beds for COVID-19 patients who are critically ill.
In the capital region, there are only four beds left as of Sunday afternoon, and some 500 people are waiting at home to be assigned to care units.
“Under the assumption that there are 1000 cases a day for the next twenty days, the government will secure over 10-thousand beds for the next three weeks.”
It will facilitate 13 medical centers under the government authority, while getting cooperation from local governments and private hospitals.
Of Sunday’s local cases, a majority of 792 were in the greater capital region, which includes Seoul, Gyeonggi-do Province and Incheon, raising the total of infections in the country to almost 43-thousand.
With cases concentrated in the central region, the Seoul education office ordered all elementary schools and kindergardens to go online starting next Tuesday until the end the end of the year, a strong measure that would originally come under distancing level three.
To find cases among people who have no symptoms, the government is opening up 150 temporary health clinics across the capital region on Monday where anyone can go and get a free test.
Temporary clinics will be installed at subway stations with high traffic and run from 9 AM to 6 PM.
The government is deploying around 800 people to do tracking and tracing assigned from among civil servants, soldiers and the police.
