PM Chung Sye-kyun to make three-day visit to Iran
South Korean Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun embarks on a three-day trip to Iran today for talks on bilateral issues and other pending matters.
He will be meeting with top officials there, including Iran’s first vice president and its parliamentary speaker.
He will also hold talks with South Korean business people in Iran.
Chung’s trip the first for a South Korean PM in 44 years comes after Tehran released a South Korean oil tanker and its captain around three months since they were detained for what Iran claimed was the ship’s pollution of the sea.
The prime minister’s office said earlier that the visit will create an opportunity to boost the traditional friendly ties between Seoul and Tehran.
Attention is on whether the two sides will discuss the issue of releasing part of Iran’s funds in South Korea frozen under UN sanctions.
